Direct and Indirect Monetisation

Having re-read Darren Rowse’s book – there’s still a lot I need to process. I think I understand now what he means about ‘direct’ and ‘indirect’ monetisation of a blog.

So in my own words:

Direct Monetisation: is when you put adverts on your blog and earn a commission from sales, or clicks. Obviously I’m going to come back to this one, as there is so much to say about it. You can put ads on your blog in several ways. The ads come in the shape of a piece of html code. (HYPER TEXT MARK UP LANGUAGE). Most bloggers start with Google Adsense and perhaps an affiliate scheme like Amazon. If you look at my first blog now, you can see that I’m using both of these schemes at the moment:

Indirect monetisation: As far as I can see this refers to the work (or prestige) you might get as a spin off from your blog. In writing your blog, you give some of your work away ‘for free’. But as your blog becomes more popular, if the content is good then you might earn a commission to do more writing. Or you might build up a field of expertise and start offering training or teaching in this area.

Of course there are plenty of arguments against putting ads on your blog and Darren discusses many of them in his book. It depends entirely what you are aiming to achieve with your writing.
