National Union of Journalists Training

I recently attended two excellent training courses run by the National Union of Journalists. You don’t always have to be a member to attend but if you join you’re entitled to a discount which is very helpful in these credit-crunching times. Contact the NUJ for further information.

The courses are subsidised by the European Union and I for one hope that they will continue to run. There is so much to say on these topics and a need to provide high quality educational initiatives. Both courses took place at the Digital Development Agency in Manchester. Spend some time with their website as the work is really forward looking and incredibly useful on all sorts of levels.

It was great not to have to travel down to London and really useful that the project is a collaboration with members of other unions (the entertainment union FEU for example).

The first course, called ‘Off-the-shelf-websites’ run by Gary Herman gave me some insights into the pros and cons of using Word Press and Blogger. Thanks Gary. I launched my first blog: Questioners Garden Time shortly afterwards and this project is going well so far. I hope you like it.

Miranda Gavin was the trainer on the second course: ‘Basic Blogging’. By the time I attended this one, I was no longer a ‘basic blogger’ but still on a fast learning curve. Miranda – as you can see –  you were an inspiration and I’m going to try to live up to your high standards!

The other important thing I’ve been doing lately is re-reading ‘Pro-Blogger – Secrets for Blogging Your Way to a Six-Figure Income’ by Darren Rowse and Chris Garrett. Buy the book. There’s so much ‘meat’ in it. I’m certain to come back to this one in future posts…
